The 9th interval was coming to a close. New dragon colors were flying in the skies and the plague seemed to have been all but conquered by the new mutations. Certainly some dragons were still not immune, but in most cases they were dud eggs. Things were progressing on schedule for the upcoming pass, some new Weyrs were even being created and the Golds and Greys were started to clutch more frequently.
It was in fact the Golden Useth's very first clutch who began this Weyr's short history. Or maybe it went a bit further than that, to her own hatching at Southern Weyr where a young girl sat in the stands watching.
Lirin worked in the kitchens. She was, by all accounts, extraordinarily normal. She enjoyed her work and thought her life well, not ever really expecting more. She behaved normally, she was of average skill in whatever she did, and she had no more and no less than what she required. And so, it came as a complete surprise when she ran forward onto the sands during the hatching and began beating on the shell of one of the eggs. Many remembered stories of Jaxxom and Ruth and thought this to be a similar scenario. Some who did not know her thought the girl mad and tried to stop her. The Queen who had laid the egg was furious, but her rider held her back.
The egg cracked under her fists, the shell thinner than she had expected and a pale green dragonette stumbled out into her lap. Lirin sobbed and cradled the green's head gently as it looked up at her with adoring eyes for a moment before her eyes closed for good.
"Mirianth!" the ear-splitting scream echoed through the Weyr as Lirin's mind shattered into pieces. Riders and non-riders alike were speechless, to be paired with a dragon for such a short time seemed... evil. Instead of the roars of mourning however, there was a humming instead. The queen egg was hatching.
"Useth it's okay, I'm fine," Rina's words carried across the sands to Lirin's ears after what seemed an eternity to the grief-stricken girl, "Come on let's get you fed."
Lirin's broken mind was overcome with jealousy, why should the Queens be immune to the plague? Why not Mirianth? Why should she be denied her only love forever? Why not HER? She ran from Weyr into the surrounding jungle, and though the Weyrfolk tried to find her, she could not be located and was thought dead.
Turns passed and Useth had just flown her first mating flight, and Lirin had been all but forgotten when she showed up to the Weyr once more. Her mother, a cook in the kitchens was delighted and welcomed her home with open arms. Lirin was filthy, ragged, half-starved, covered in scars, and not speaking a word but her daughter was home and they could help her now. She carried a pack with her, a pack she refused to let anyone touch and snarled at whenever they tried and so they let it go.
Then one day, while Rina was occupied and Useth slept after having just eaten a rather large meal, Lirin crept into the Useth's weyr and stabbed a pointed stick into Useth's side. Useth woke in a rage, swiping massive claws out and mortally wounding the girl who died with an insane smile on her face.
Useth's wound was evaluated and it didn't seem to have been very deep and yet the dragon insisted that she felt... wrong. Rina suggested that perhaps they, and any dragons who had been near Useth after the attack, should go into isolation until they were sure that the gold had not been infected with some new plague. There was a new Weyr under construction to the west that had not yet been populated by dragons, perhaps they could go there?
Crescent Cove Weyr was nearly complete by the time Useth laid her eggs. 20 eggs lay on the sands, including a gold and grey, but all were too shocked to celebrate. Rina stared at the eggs, each and every one of them had a dark marking on them. The markings appearing in colors ranging from black, to a deep red, to a dark purple. Each mark varied at least a bit in shape some were a single slash like a cut, others were multiple slashes like that of a beast, others looked like starbursts, smudges, swirls, or some other odd shape. Despite the odd markings Useth didn't proclaim any of them dead, and so plans were made for a hatching.
Now, with threadfall still turns away, the new Weyr opens it's doors to all who are willing to help them grow. All positions are open, and as Useth and hers are to return to Southern Weyr, adult riders are needed as well.

As for the rest, during her years of wandering Lirin stumbled upon a research facility that once belonged to Kitti Ping. Inside were some some small cryo containers filled with vials, most of which had been broken but a few still remained intact and preserved. Lirin was about to leave when she caught sight of a symbol that resembled a dragon on the wall above the cryo containers along with some text underneath. Most of the text had been rubbed out but the words disease, and dangerous could clearly be read. So, she took the vials and somehow found her way back to Southern Weyr, only really expecting the liquid to kill Useth and make Rina feel as she felt.
Unbeknownst to Lirin, this is what the text actually said:
"I, Kitti Ping Yung, leave these in the event of a possible disease that the dragons I have created this serum which contains a medicine that may help. This serum contains genetic markers never added to the dragon's DNA that were deemed potentially dangerous as they were never tested, but I believe that they may improve upon the dragons' immune systems. Please use in the event of an emergency when all other options have been exhausted, the side-effects are unknown.
As dictated to Wind Blossom Yung"
