What is a Mark? This section is meant as a refresher, or to be used by those who haven't read many/any of the books. Marks are the currency of Pern. Wood is used and stamped with a die (therefore preventing counterfeiting) according to the amount it is worth. Pern uses what can be considered a fiat money system (money not backed by a valuable material) despite the wood of the 'coins' being considered valuable in Pern. They come in values of 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 5, 10, and 100 marks. 100 mark coins are very rare and only used for the largest transactions. One side of the mark is stamped with a line and a number. If the number is above the line, it means the value is in whole marks; if the number is below the line, the value is a fraction of a mark. The 2 and 1/2 mark discs are the only ones that could really be confused in such a way. The back of the mark is stamped with the issuing Hold or Crafthall's badge. New marks can be made by their Hold or Hall, but they usually only do so when the mark is worn and needs replacing.
