Mate: None
Daughters: Ranara, Cook, 26; Ceris, Journeyman Healer, 23; Taralo, Candidate, 20; Ysui, Weyrbrat, 5

Grandchildren: Several Weyrbrats[/ul]
Dragon or Wher: Gold Ranisk
Pets: None
Appearance:
Ranis stands out in a crowd simply because she dominates it. Far from a small woman, both in height and in weight, you really can't not notice her. That's not to say she is a towering giant or an obese lump of fat - yes, Ranis is above average, but there is nothing truly grotesque about her.
At six feet even, Ranis is taller than most women and even a majority of men. There is width and bulk to her, yes, but as aforementioned, she is neither obese nor a bodybuilder. Prior to her Impression, she often joked that one should never trust a skinny cook. As a handler, almost constantly running about tending to one thing or another, some of the mass has certainly shifted to muscle, though still she is certainly big-boned and well-fed. With wide and well-used child-bearing hips and a bosom that more than ample, at the very least Ranis has enough curves to fit her physique, though she's far from being a model.
A rather homely woman, Ranis is much more easily described as plain than anything else. While her height may make her stick out, her face is far from the same. On the whole, one could just describe her features as small, almost mousy, set in a round face. Her lips are thin and narrow, sitting beneath a small, slightly upturned nose. Amber is the dominant color in her narrow-set, almond-shaped eyes, the color darkening as you move towards the pupil. Her arching eyebrows are well-kept, and she works to keep her appearance neat. Perhaps the one interesting feature about this woman would be her hair. At first glance, it would seem to be a charcoal gray, but on closer inspection, it becomes apparent that, instead, this woman has simply started graying very young. Her black hair is now interspersed with strands of silver, giving it a depth that goes beyond natural highlighting. Her hair is kept short, around chin-length, and is straight and somewhat full.
Ranis's choice of clothing tends more towards the practical than the fashionable, though to say her work clothes are plain would be far from the truth. As if making up for her otherwise plain appearance, even the sturdy hide clothing she wears during hard scrubbing is finely tooled and more often than not dyed either a bold jeweltone or a subtle but pretty shade. Her more casual clothing is embroidered and decorated, cut to accentuate her figure. Dresses are kept for special occasions, as they are much more of a hassle than she is willing to put up with. Regardless what it is she does chose to wear, it is always very neat and very clean. Creases and wrinkles are not acceptable at any time.
Skills
Organization: Almost to a fault. There is never a single thing out of place.
Basic Personality:
It rarely takes more than a few minutes after one meets Ranis to glean what position this woman would have held had she not Impressed. The distinct maternity of a Headwoman clings to this woman like a crawler clings to the wall. It is impossible to deny the fact that she cares for every single person in the Weyr, even if the delivery isn't exactly sugar-coated.
Strength of personality is very apparent when meeting Ranis. Indeed, she can occasionally come off as extravagant simply because her emotions and opinions are there and they are not to be denied. She is not a fickle or temperamental person, mood swings a rare occurrence caused by proddiness or PMS. Stubbornness is an inevitable and expected trait in this woman, her will solid when it has been made. Still, before said conclusion has been made, she will weigh the options and the data as evenly as she can. While not the brightest crayon, she still has 'street' smarts and knows that others still have valuable input (some of the time). If someone approaches her with an issue or an idea, she will give it thought... though whether or not she takes this to heart can, at times, seem to be a crapshoot.
Had her fate ended up differently, it would not be a big stretch to see Ranis riding a Grey Dragon. The maternal instinct is strong in this one, and she does her best to care for everyone. A bigger proprietor of tough love, someone is more likely to be told to buck up and rub some dirt on it than to be coddled, but there is a time and place for the latter as well. Before she has Impressed, Ranis was partway through raising a handful of children, and all were well cared for. Indeed, the fact that she was a cook certainly showed that her priority was caring for the hundreds of people within Western's caverns. While it may be rough around the edges, Ranis is, at her foundation, a kind, caring woman.
If there is any one thing that makes Ranis peculiar, it would be her borderline obsession with cleanliness. While far from a germaphobe, she cannot stand to have dirty hands, and if anything else on her person is soiled, her demeanor becomes markedly negative. Everything must be neat and must be in its place. Her quarters are meticulously organized, and even the smallest thing out of place can cause her to throw a fit. OCD, perhaps, but it cannot be denied that this helps her keep her handlers in check.

History:
There is nothing exciting about Ranis's entry into the world. Her parentage is nothing remarkable, either - a flightlusty Brownrider and a lower caverns woman happy to oblige. She was born a fat, happy baby, raised in the Lower Caverns into a fat, happy child. Despite her play and her chores, baby fat and then a little extra always clung to her body. It never bothered her, and any kid that tried to tell her otherwise often got a bloody nose or a black eye. A bit of a rough and tumble kid, she got into her fair share of scrapes, though unlike some of her peers, she grew out of it.
An early bloomer, Ranis began to shoot up to her final height around age nine, and by twelve she had easily surpassed her peers in height and... curviture, though by then it didn't matter quite as much. The Weyrbrats had begun to naturally sort themselves out by natural talent and interests into various crafts and jobs. With a knack for cooking and organizing, it wasn't all surprising when Ranis turned her attentions to the kitchens and began her apprenticeship, as it were. Due to the interval, hatchings were few and far between, though Ranis did stand at a few, if just to give the dragonets a wider selection. Just because there wasn't Thread now didn't mean they could really risk losing any hatchlings to a lack of candidates.
A dragon would never come to her, but it didn't matter much to Ranis. She was content in the kitchens, cooking for the Weyr and caring for its inhabitants. Further complicating her ability to be a Candidate was the fact that, as a Lower Caverns woman, the losers of flights often would wander her way. And Ranis wasn't at all against their advances. She may not be the most beautiful woman in the caverns, but she was amicable and giving. Frankly, it was only a matter of time before she found herself pregnant and ineligible for candidacy. Her daughter, named Ranara, would be the first of many produced over her lifetime.
By the time Ranis had reached her early twenties, her skill in the Lower Caverns had gotten her noticed enough to get a promotion to an assistant headwoman. Now with a small portion of the lower caverns under her control, she would shine, helping organize and care for the Weyr. Soon she found herself in charge of a new branch within the Weyr - a troop of Whers brought in for an extra layer of protection at night. With felines and other nasty beasties out there, it was never a bad idea to keep an extra pair or six of night-vision eyes.
It was a complete accident that she ended up even Impressing. That fateful evening, Ranis had simply been delivering buckets of blood porridge to the candidates who were seeking out a partner in the middle of the night. There was a bit of a commotion, the candidates hurrying away from a particularly unhappy hatchling - a Queen that had decided none of those rushing to her were worthy. She snarled, darting forward. Those who had been taking lessons knew enough to get out of the way, let the Gold run free if she wanted. Ranis, however, did not, but it seemed like it didn't matter too much. The Gold bit into the woman's arm, drawing blood and declaring that Ranisk did NOT appreciate being left waiting for so long.
Thus came the deciding factor in what Ranis would ultimately end up doing with her life. Training went by rather quickly to the new Handler, and they were off to start their lives. While most of the more dangerous jobs were prohibited to them, Ranisk's egg-bearing capabilities too needed for her life to be risked, they still kept themselves dedicated to home life.
With the announcement of the opening of Crescent Cove Weyr and the overcrowding within Western, Ranis volunteered to take a troop of her Handlers to watch over the Weyr and its territories. Just because it was on an island did not mean that they were any safer from felines and outside attacks, and Ranis will not let anything happen to her Weyr.

Strengths
- Strength of Character: Ranis has what it takes to lead the Wherhandlers as well as control her sometimes unruly beast. Nothing phases this woman.
- Maternal: With so many under her, having a strong sense to care for her handlers definitely helps. It is her duty and her pleasure to cake such responsibility.
- Responsible: The very fact that she takes it upon herself to watch over the handlers.
- Stable: Not one to fly off the handle - a good trait in a leader who needs to keep the safety of an entire island in mind.
- Organized: Nothing will ever be lost under Ranis's watch.
Faults (same as strengths)
- Impatient: Ranis has no tolerance for whining or anything that feels wasteful, including some past times.
- OCD: There are times where her need to be neat and orderly will cause disruptions when she gets so caught up on one thing that she can't continue.
- Stubborn: When her mind is made up, rarely will Ranis stay from it - which can cause issues if there are better options available.
- Adamant: Ranis is Ranis, and if you don't like it, then it's not her problem.
- Single-Minded: When her mind is set on one thing, she doesn't waver - to the point where important things on the peripherial may be missed.
